ICYMI: They’re Coming for Us
When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross. –Sinclair Lewis
First, they came for the data.
But I could not see it, so I did nothing.
Next, they came for the immigrants.
But I did not know one, so it did not concern me.
Then they came for the universities.
But I hate intellectual snobs, so I did not care.
Then they came for the lawyers.
But no one likes lawyers, so I said nothing.
Then they came for the big cities.
But I live in a small town, so I did not mind.
Then they came for the flag burners and protesters.
But I disagree with them so they got what they deserve.
But when at last they came for me, there was no one left to object or speak out and the law no longer meant anything…
This is my update to the original poem, First They Came, by Pastor Martin Niemoller.
He was talking about how the Nazis dismantled the Weimar Republic in Germany after coming to power in 1933 using the tools of democracy (the vote).
In case you have not noticed, the Trump regime is attacking every pillar of a free society and U.S. democracy itself. The goal is an authoritarian state run by President-for-Life Donald Trump.
History indeed repeats itself, but Karl Mark was wrong. This subsequent round is every bit as much a tragedy as the first time.
God help us. We are finding out exactly why we never should have voted a felon back into the nation’s most powerful office.

A regrettably timely update, Candy. Thanks for posting.
